Slam poetry is the breath mint that boring poetry needed!
Slam poetry and spoken word are flooding the world with pure excitement and a reignited passion for poems.
Poetry is no longer a lifeless, ill-written, foreign, boring set of words and verses linked with ambiguous purpose hundreds of years ago only to be studied and recognized for their wisdom now. Let's face it: the "study of" was killing poetry. Slam poetry is the revival - it's the breath mint that boring poems needed. Spoken word is the rebirth of a diluted art and the ability to use poetry - including all the devices that make it stand out - to communicate real, current and identifiable messages, stories and emotions. It's one of the most powerful outlets humans have, and more and more people are taking advantage of it. Educators in classrooms are changing their curriculum to keep students engaged. Why? Because some kids enter school and they hate poetry. It used to be good fun and entertainment - Dr. Seuss and William Blake. Then suddenly it turned to Robert Frost and Shakespeare. There's nothing wrong with the latter, but let's be real - what do you think people would be more interested to learn - Robert Frost? Or someone like Sarah Kay who's more in tune with the times and with the demographics? There's an argument for both. And I don't think poetry's history should be neglected, but the stage needs to be shared. My site and my blog are dedicated to widening the reach of slam poetry. I have fallen in love with the art; when I see a spoken word artist really deliver on stage, it fuels my desire to help other poets - aspiring, emerging and even established - reach new heights.
