"I've Created A Monster"

When this spoken word piece got submitted to me, I had to share it. There are so many aspects of this piece that line up with the direction the slam poetry scene is going in. I mean yes, you can get out there, go see a slam poem, and judge people on how they spit 3 minutes of their life. That's where it all started and where it's name is rooted, with slam poetry competitions.
But more and more, poets are upping their game. Poetry remains the epicenter, but spoken word is being spoken in different ways. I've seen them with music more and more lately. I'm starting to see longer pieces, breaking the three minute threshold. I'm seeing stages broaden from cafes to...well, graveyards! Kudos on that Emilio, you killed it my using the context of the piece directly in line with your scene.
The words, the thought behind the prose, every body movement - Emilio really thought this piece out. I also realized something. He's got an innate quality that most slam poets have to work really (really) hard on: stage presence. He knows how to own the spotlight, using his body to emphasize his lyrics. That skill is a gem (Yea, I'm jealous). But what it means is Emilio can focus harder on the stories he wants to tell, so I'm looking forward to what is still to come from this star!
